*I say from the open window as we drive back to the station*

*While I'm driving back*
'Dave, how about you file it, and I'll follow along with you, I learn way better by seeing it done'

'Sounds good.'

*I say as I look back at the detainee and nake sure he is ok.*

'How do you feel about everything so far?'

'I'm pretty comfortable so far, just gotta get used to how ERT does business'

*I shift in my seat a few times, the butt of my service weapon seems to be jabbing me in the side*

'I understand, you will get used to it.'

*I say as we turn into the complex and back into are parking spot.*

*We walk into the break room to fill out our report*

*I grab my portable radio*

"COPA, PC-8 portable, show us in station for time being on paperwork"

*I pull out my cell phone and call Stabler*

'' Hey Stabler, its Lafferty. I just wanted to let you know that I will take care of the report for you. ''

*I finish typing up the report and look at Stone*

'Alright, whenever your ready lets head back out'

*I then go to the pop machine and buy me a 20oz bottle of coke*

*I walk over to the pop machine, get a Cherry Coke, and take a long swig*

'Yeah, let's hit the streets, I'm ready to get some real drive time in'

*I head out the door, saddle up in the drivers seat of PC-8, turn the car on, adjust the EAT and the 2-way to my liking, and wait for Lafferty to get in*

'Sounds good'

*I walk over to my locker and get my spare handheld battery and walk out to our unit and get in the passenger seat*

'I don't know if they gave you a spare battery for your handheld so I made sure to bring mine in case yours dies'

*I put the battery into the charger and pick up the mic*

"PC-8 to dispatch: Were back available, any calls pending for patrol?"

*I put the mic back on the clip and put my seatbelt on*

'Ready when you are'

*I say as I take a swig of my coke*

*I put the car in drive, and take us out of the ERT complex. I hang a right onto S. Trulit Road, toward downtown Phoxlind*

'What do you say Dave, should we pull in somewhere and set up shop, or just cruise downtown with the alley lights on, to better light up sidewalks and alleyways?'

*I look out the passenger window*

'What do you say, we head down the the downtown district and find a nice alley to sit blacked out and see what happens'

*I take another swig of my coke and try to get comfortable*

'I can get behind that idea'

*picks up the mic off the dash*

"COPA, PC-8, go ahead and show us on patrol in district 4, we're gonna set ourselves up in the alley off of Empire Road, between 8th and 9th Avenues"

*I pull up to the alley, back the car in, shut her down, and dim the screen on the EAT*

*As we pull up and Stone kills the motor I suddenly think of something*

'Hey, not sure if you were aware of this, but our cars as all police cars do in the US. We have a surveillance mode button'

*I point to it*

'What this does is kills all light so you can keep your engine running and your not admitting any light for other cars to see'

*I continue to sit there for a few minutes and notice a car run a red light and almost hit another car*

'Hey Stone, lets go get that guy'

*I fire the car up, drop it into drive, and pull out of the alley, I catch up to him about a block down, and grab the mic*

"COPA, PC-8, about to commence a traffic stop on a blue Ford Taurus,
failure to stop at Ninth and Empire, license plate is a Phoxlind plate,
Five Zero Two Sierra Tango November, requesting plate check"

'Dave, let's key that plate into the EAT and run it just in case COPA
doesn't give us an audio read-back, I'll go ahead and light him up and
make the approach. You good with that?'

*I hit the switch for the light bar, and give 2 quick manual blasts of the yelp mode on the siren to get his attention, the car pulls over, I move PC-8 in behind him, and put the director bar on point left mode*

'You got it, I was going to have you make the approach'

*I turn the EAT toward me and begin keying the LP into it*

* I grab my traffic vest, throw it on, and start to step out of the car, but not before turning on the floodlight and the takedown lights*

*I walk up the driver's side of the car, flashlight in hand, turned on, and give a tap on the drivers window with the butt of my light, the driver rolls it down*

'Good Evening, I'm Officer Stone with ERT Police. Can I see your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance please?'

Driver: Was I speeding?

'Well, I was in the alley back there with my partner, and we noticed you blew through that last red light and almost caused an accident. Let's see some paperwork.'

*The driver gives me his documentation. I look over it, the registration is still valid, the insurance policy is up to date, and the license is valid*

'I'm gonna hang on to your license for a moment, I'll be right back, you can have your registration and insurance card back'

*I hand back the documents, and head for the car with drivers license in hand to run it*

*I enter the LP onto the computer*

*I then flip our dome light on to the red light*

'Hey man, run that by me again. I think I misheard you. Here's Roberts D/L, can you do me a favor and punch it though. If his D/L comes back clear, I might let him go with a verbal'

* I hand Lafferty the drivers license, and while that's being run, I walk back toward the subject's car, and up to the window*

'Is there a reason we're headed somewhere in such a hurry this evening?'

Driver: We're trying to get home and relieve our baby-sitter

'OK, I'm gonna go check and see if your license has come back on my computer yet, excuse me'

*I walk back to PC-8, and pop my head in the door*

'Lafferty, I don't see any reason to ruin their night here, but you're my mentor, and if you say write the ticket, I'll write it'

'I'm sorry?'

*I say looking at Stone*

'Are you needing the return again?'

*I go ahead and type in Robert's DL*

(What you put as being on the EAT, and what you said to me are 2 different things regarding the year of the car. That's why I asked for the re-read, for the sake of realism, like I mis-heard you or mis-read the read-back in character.)

'Well, I was gonna let him go if this was his first, but with 2 this year, and one for this already, it's gonna be a hefty ticket instead of going home and enjoying the evening'

*I fill out the ticket with the information gathered from the EAT, and mark down a fine of $351, and walk back to the subject car*

'Unfortunately for you, Mr. Tillery, your license has had a couple of marks on it this year already, and so you'll be getting cited for Failure to Stop at a Traffic Control Device, in the amount of $351. You may do one of a couple things. You may wish to pay the fine within 15 days, or you may wish to contact the court within 15 days to receive either a mitigation hearing or a contested action hearing, please do any one of those within 15 days, or your fine will double, and you may lose your license. *I hand him the citation and his license*

'OK, you folks have a good evening, and please try to drive a little safer'

*I head back to the car, get in, and let him pull away before I start turning lights off*

'Oh, haha. Typo, didn't even see that.'

'Yeah, its a 2008. My mistake'

*After Stone gets back in the car*

'Alright, I didn't see anything wrong with that stop'

*I flip off the dome light and dim the screen on the EAT*

'Whenever your ready Boss.'

*I turn off the floodlight, takedowns, and director bar, but leave the LED's on, and pull back out into traffic*

'It's getting on 0200, let's set up a couple blocks down from a tavern, and look for potential DUI's, unless you have something else in mind'

*I almost forget that I left the LED's on, but I reach up and flick the switch*

'Sounds good to me'

*I say with a chuckle as I pull out my phone to answer a text from my girlfriend*

'So, Jake are you married?'

'No man, I never had time for marriage in my old field. I used to be an Information Technology engineer, working with smaller companies to get their computers and stuff to the next level, I was always in and out of town, working middle of the night so as not to disrupt business, I got sick of that though, so I applied out here with ERT. Don't get me wrong, man, I dated when I could, but I lived the bachelor's life mostly'

'I can understand that'

*I say as we come to a halt at a redlight*

'How do you like ERT so far?'

*I pick up my coke bottle and get another sip out of it*

'I'm really liking ERT a lot'

*I keep driving the patrol car toward a local tavern to set up for DUI, when I see what appears to be a woman flagging us down from a sidewalk*

'Dave, does it look like that woman is trying to flag us down?'

'Sure does.'

*I roll down my window*

'I guess just pull up right over there'

*I pull up to where the woman is standing, and turn on the director bar and the alley lights*

Woman on sidewalk: Can you guys give me a ride back to my place, I don't want to walk all the way home

*I turn down the 2-way radio, and kinda lean towards Dave's side of the car*

'I'm sorry ma'am, but ERT regulations prohibit me from doing so, but I would be more than happy to call you a cab, and wait here until the cab arrives for you'

*I pull back from the window*

'Dave, can we directly radio for a cab through COPA, or do you wanna pull your cell out and call up the cab company? I'm not too familiar with town yet, so I'm not sure what cab companies you have.'

'Yeah sure'

*I pull out my cell phone and dial yellow cab company*

* I also write it down on a piece of paper and hand it to Jake*

'Yellow cab company'

'Yes this is Lafferty with the PD I need a cab at 24 Chevy road'

'Alright, we have one around the block'

'Alright thanks'

*I look at the lady*

'One will be here on just a ment, we will wait with you until it arrives'

*I notice the lady keeps looking at Jack*

'You know her?'

*I look at Lafferty with a look that says 'oh great, shes either hammered or has something to hide', then I look back to the woman*

'Ma'am, do you mind pulling out some ID for me real quick, just for our own records'

'This will be interesting'

* Isay as I wait for the lady to get her ID*

*I reach up to the control panel and light up the main LED's, and prepare to step out of the car*

'Dave, hop out with me and I'll talk to her, and I'll have you wait with the cabbie when he rolls up, go ahead and hold him here until I figure out if we're gonna be giving her a ride after all or not.'

*I grab the radio mic off the dash, and key it up*

"COPA, PC-8, show us on a welfare call, flagged down by a female pedestrian in the 20 block of Chevy Road, details to follow via EAT"

*I grab my hat and put it on as I step out of the car*

*I notice the cab pull up and go stand by him*

'Hey, it will be just a minute'

'Yeah, not a problem'

*I then walk back up and stand fat enough away so Jake can handle the situation on his own, bit close enough if something happens.*

*I walk around the front of our car, and the woman hands me her ID*

'If you don't mind, I'm just gonna type your information into my
computer. Why don't you have a seat for me on the curb in front of my
car up here'

*I open the passenger door, sit in the seat, and turn the EAT toward me, and start typing*

I walk over to where the woman sat down, she appears to be fine, dressed normally, no visible signs of intoxication or any reason to think about a domestic situation*

'Ma'am, I'm sorry for the delay, you can go ahead and stand up, and head for the taxi'

*I see Jake give me the sign*

*I walk back over to the unit and get in the passenger seat and roll up the window*

'Ready when you are'

*I get in the car and kill the lights, I see the taxi cab take off*

'I think she was looking at me because of the uniform, you know as well as I do that chicks dig it!'

*I start taking off toward the residential areas of town to check for vehicle prowls or anything of that nature*

'So, where should I start looking for an apartment, I'm camped out in a hotel still with a moving truck full of my stuff'

'Well there is a two bedroom two bath house for sale in Truitt you might want to look into.'

*I take another sip of my coke*

'I know a relator and he will give you a good discount'

'If you want a house that is'

'Sounds good, you'll have to give me his business card. I've thought about actually buying a house as opposed to living in apartments, it'd give me space and a little more privacy'

*I remember my Cherry Coke is wedged between my seat and the console, I pull it out and take a drink, and start daydreaming about a house, a wife, kids, dogs*

'Well here is his card'

*I hand him the card as I pull out my handheld and look at the battery level*

*I look at my watch, and then look over at Dave*

'Well, what do you say we head back to the barn, it's getting to be that time.'

*I grab the radio mic off the dash and key it up*

"COPA, PC-8, returning to quarters for end of shift"

*I look over at Dave*

'I'd venture to say this was a fairly successful first night.'

'Sounds good'

*I sit back in the seat and enjoy the ride back to the station*

"6 in service."

* I bring PC-8 into the ERT complex, passing Lt. Libor on our way into the gate, I give him a wave, and then I take the car over to the gas pumps, fill the Charger's tank with gas, and park the car in it's spot*

*I say over my shoulder to Dave*

'I'll be inside Dave, I'm gonna bail out of this uniform shirt and belt, and then give your Realtor buddy a call, and see about that place in Trulit. I'm so ready for a shower and a nap'

*I head in the back door of Police Headquarters*

*Stone and myself walk out to the unit*

'I'll let you drive till your tired'

*We pull out of the complex and drive to the residential part of phoxlind*

"8 to dispatch we are available for calls"

PC-5 to dispatch. Unit available.

"PC-5 and any traffic unit in the area, we've got a disabled vehicle on Trulit interpass Eastbound to Trulit. PC-5 can you go check it out and solve the problem, and Traffica can you get someone up there as an advanced warning to keep traffic from building up, morning rush hour soon"

"On my way" I pull out of the lot, and turn onto Trulit Interpass. "I see it" I pull up behind and slightly left of the car.I turn on my traffic directors. "Dispatch can we have DOT put a slowdown warning on the road signs? Traffic's flying by."

*I put on my hi-viz vest and get cones and flares out of the trunk. I put the cones around our cars and the flares in a pattern that gradually closes the first lane.*
