I walk into the Tec building and go to the receptionist's desk. 'Steve Morrigan, Traffic Division. I've been tasked a pair of technicians and a cherry picker by the District Commissioner.'
She nods and types a few things into the computer. 'i've got the work order here, if you can just sign off on that digital pad, you'll be all set.' I sign my name and she prints me a copy. 'The technicians are in the bay running final checks on the vehicle. You should be all set.'
I thank her and head out to the service bay. I see a couple guys checking the air cylinders on a crew cab cherry picker. As I walk up, one of them offers me his hand. 'I'm Jon Suarez, Senior technician. This is Dominic James.' The younger technician flashes me a peace sign. There's an obvious 10 years between the two. 'We're fueled up and ready to go.'
I look at the truck and hop into the back with my laptop. 'Let's do it.' Jon takes shotgun and Dominic fires up the diesel engine. We pull out of the bay and head through the complex to the interpass. I open my computer and type in the locations of the failures we've had so far. 'is there a common conduit running to the two incidents we've had?'
Jon types the addresses into his own EAT, in aspecialized program. A few conduits light up green. 'Kind of.' He looks back to me a moment. 'Problem
is, they're in separate control districts. Basically, there are a number of control sub-boxes that all gather from the separate streets and meet up into power conduits. We're gonna have to check that main line. It should be right up here.'
we pull up to a ground box with a wire running up to a transformer. 'If it's affecting both districts, it's coming from this box, Dominic calls back as he puts the truck in park and turns on his ambers and director bar. We all get out and they throw on heavy rubber gloves, passing me a pair as well. We also don rubber boots to help prevent shock. Dominic takes out a pole as Jon starts inspecting the cable visually. He uses the pole as a key and opens the cover from a 10 foot distance.
Jon returns and stars gesturing toward the block of circuits. 'See that series of LEDs that are flashing rapidly? Those are diagnostic lights. We have a reader that analyzes the code it's putting out.' Jon pulls out what looks like a large calculator and points it at the lights.
