*I pull into the TSD parking area, unload the suspect from my car, and take him in for booking at TSD.*

'Hey, you guys want this guy?'

TSD Booking Deputy: Yeah, bring him here, I was listening the whole time on the radio.

*I un-cuff the guy, sit him down on the chair the TSD Booking Deputy motioned to, and hook him up to TSD's cuffs*

'Well, I'm gonna go pull up a chair in your break room, got any warm coffee back there?'

'Yeah, they should have some back there'

*I head into their break room, pour a cup of coffee, sit down with a TSD deputy, and key up my shoulder mic*

*I hear COPA, and see amber revolving lights in the distance when it gets close enough that it could see me clearly, I wave at it, and see it pull to the side of the road in the opposing lane and the driver step out, and wait for traffic to clear, before jogging over to me.
'Ok so what care needs to be towed?'
    'That one.'
*I point to the car in the driveway.
'I'll Temporarily block traffic for you real quick.'
    'Ok, thanks.'
*I walk back out to my patrol vehicle and get inside the driver seat and turn on the rear amber lights and block the lane as so no cars can get by for the moment. I watch as the man re-enters his tow vehicle and quickly, when traffic is open pull into the lane the house is on and turn around approaching the vehicle in reverse. I watch as the man connects the vehicle and waves. I return the wave, and stay put while he pulls out in front of me. I pull out after him, turning the amber lights off, and follow the vehicle back towards the ERT Complex, I pick up the vehicle's radio.
"PC-4 Out of Service, Transporting 1, DUI."
*I put the radio back down and return my attention to the road.

The EAT chimes, and I pull it my way to read through. "Eighth and Empire. There's an accident we're being called out to. PFD is working it, but they need us there for traffic." As I get ready to tell Thomas to buy the call, I hear the warrant call out. "All right Thomas, let's see what you think here. Do we go to the warrant call for security, or should we continue to the traffic call?"

*I finally decide to approach the house, K-9 unit or not, so I walk from
my car at the end of the block, up to the house, and grab my shoulder
    mic, and unlatch my holster*

"COPA, PC-7, I am approaching the house, requesting 3rd unit to Orange Street, code 2"

*I see the occupants standing in the middle of the street. A female, and 2 kids.*

'Folks, I'm Officer Stone with ERT PD, what happened?'

Female Occupant: We were inside sleeping when we heard glass shattering and footsteps downstairs in the kitchen. We ran outside through the front door, my husband, who is a former Marine, got his shotgun out, and ran around the back to stop whoever broke in as they tried to leave. My husband is still back there with a loaded shotgun, and we haven't seen the intruder come out yet, so as far as we know, he's still in there.

'OK ma'am, what's your husbands name, and what was his military rank'

His name is Nate Johnston, and he was a Lance Corporal.

'OK, that will help me address him in a manner to which he is accustomed, especially with a weapon in his hands, little psychology at work. What I need you to do is take yourself and your kids across the street into the neighbors yard, and sit down on the ground, if shots start flying here, I don't want you to become a target.

*I trot back down the block, and eyeball my own house up the block over my shoulder, and reach my patrol car. I pull it up in front of the house, putting my car between me and the house. I reach down and turn the siren to PA mode, and light up the house with my spotlight. I grab the PA mic and key it up.*

'THIS IS THE ERT POLICE DEPARTMENT. INTRUDER IN THE HOUSE, EXIT THE HOUSE THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR, WALKING BACKWARD TOWARD THE SOUND OF MY VOICE. YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS TO COMPLY'

*I grab the microphone for the 2 way, and key up*

"All patrol units, PC-7, be advised that I am engaged in a potential stand-off situation at 4 Orange Street (it won't turn into a major stand-off, I know this is patrol). Requesting any available patrol unit to respond Code 2, and stage behind my unit. Units be advised that there is a male civilian armed with a shotgun in the backyard of the house.

*I shut my door & slam the gear shift down into drive at the same time I light the box up*
as I get onto the street & start heading that way, I start to come up on traffic
*I hit siren for a short burst & pass them*
approximately 2 mins later I arrive

*I look over at Dave and Nathan*

'Female homeowner reported a single intruder break and enter to 911, entry made through a window around the back, intruder last believed to be in the kitchen. 911 call was cut short although we do know that the male homeowner is a former Marine, Lance Corporal Nate Johnston, and he is in the back yard, with a loaded shotgun. I haven't yet addressed him, but I have given the intruder a warning to exit the house over the car's PA. I wasn't about to make entry without some assistance. The last thing I want is for the homeowner to start having flashbacks about combat and start mistaking everyone for Taliban and try to blow us away.'

*I look at the house quickly, and draw up a quick sketch in my mind, just based on information received thus far*

'OK, it's been way longer than the 60 seconds I gave him to come out quietly. Nathan and Dave, we're gonna need to make entry. I do not want Mr. Johnston to have an opportunity to shoot the intruder. I want to go around the back and get Lance Corporal Johnston unarmed first, then we'll try to make contact from the rear, since we believe the intruder was in the kitchen last. When we go around the side of the house, we need to make our presence known as clear as possible, and ask for permission before we cross over the side fence, the last thing I need is that shotgun getting turned on us, and we need to let the Lance Corporal know in no uncertain terms that he is not in danger any more, and that he can safety his weapon and stand down, and then lets get him sat down on the ground back there, that way he doesn't end up in any cross-fire. Is everyone on board with that?'

*I get to the rear of the house & see the homeower*

    *I grab my radio*

"1158, go ahead and holster your weapon, I want you to appear non-threatening to the homeowner, remember he is a Marine, and as such could be an unstable element at this time. Re-assure him that he can stand down, and ask his permission BEFORE you cross over the fence. Tell him to place his weapon on the ground, step back from it, and sit down on the ground. Maintain a secure posture back there near the back door. I'll give the intruder one more chance over the PA to come quietly. If that fails, we will enter on MY command. Before we enter, I will poll everyone on the radio, to ensure that we understand what we're doing.....do you copy?"
