School Explosion

Requesting the Light force on standby
Squad 1 respond Code 3 for medical assistance and have the Lt. check the area for fire. OSC for fire will be and will remain Lt. Raven.
1 Police unit please respond.

BLS-1 Respond.

Weather: Raining.
Traffic: Light
Time: 1405h
Concerns: Possibilty of injury to first responder. City EMS is checking out the other students from the lab. PPD is interviewing any uninjured. No units enter without SCBA on. Any EMS personnel entering the third floor please wear an SCBA tank or a rebreather.
MA Units: PFD Light equipment unit 3 is on scene with 4 firefighters checking the area, no other units with training avaiable to respond.

"PC-5 first on scene." I put on my raid jacket for ID and ask if PPD needs help. they dont. I set a safety zone up for the firetrucks and tell PPD to do crowd control. I also begin directing traffic.

I arrive after dodging traffic. After securing my SCBA I grab a fire extinguisher. "Jansen, grab the trauma and jump bag, Mitch blankets, Davis another extinguisher." I say, my voice muffled. "McGuire, stay outside we'll send out any walking injuries."

I arrive on the scene and go to squad 1.
"Ewan , can i borrow a SCBA?"

"BLS-1 receives, Raven. COPA, bes advised, I'm pulling up now."

*I pull into the parking lot, shut off the lights, put a plastic cover over the clipboard, grab a portable then get out*

"BLS-1 to Squad-1 interior, please advise me when you are coming down with somebody and I'll bring the stretcher to the exit. I want to keep the stretcher dry as long as I can for the patients."

*I walk around to the back and open up the back doors*

"Be advised, according to 911 calls, apparently the only walking victim left is the first aider. Everyone else is torn, burnt, or both."

I sit back and try not to recall a similar call I had when I first join the Police Department. There was a large explosion in an elementary school that left almost every student burned horribly. It was a horrid scene and I thank God I'm not there to see how bad these guys are. Yes they're older, but they are still only kids

"Got I say" Through my SCBA.

**I run and get the blankets**

"Now what?"

"Yeah Azch, you know how to work it?" I ask. "Alrgih once Zach joins us we'll go up."

I get the trauma and jump bag from the rig. "I'm set!" I yell

"Ridgeback, get your stretcher over here, we need it to carry some stuff up."

I check my air while I wait for Zack. The meter tells me that its "FULL".

*I get on my SCBA gear and grab a EMS bag and an entinguisher.*

"Alright, I'll start looking for victims and any signs of fire. I'll tell you if I see anything wierd."

I get on the SCBA grab a stercher with truama kit oxygen and EKG on it.
"Alright Lets go!"
"Burke are we going to need a HAZMAT squad here?"

"Negative, according to the Chem teacher, the stored chemicals in the lab are nothing that would require HAZMAT, just some corrosive and flammable stuff. Really nothing you can't buy over the counter. She only lets her AP classes handle those, and they are in another storage room. HAZMAT shouldn't be neccessary. Any hazardous chemicals one fire fighter should be able to handle."

I check the list of the chemicals stored there according to last week's log. It shows there should be a bunch of weak diluted acids in back in jugs and she was using Sodium Nitrate, Hydrogen Gas, Concentrated Sulfur liquid and NaOH, an extremely corrosive powder. If this was spilled on a student, they'll need major burn treatment. Lets hope other things fell on them instead...

I go up stairs to the room and see some victims."
"Looks like a small class"

The class had twenty five people. Only seven or so were not able to walk out uninjured. The injured are still there the rest are outside

I look down to an automatic alarm ringing in this calls area.... Appears to be a heat sensor alarm in the vents above the Chem lab.. Maybe the explosion blew a hole in the fume hood's vent.

"COPA to Scene Command, be advised, I'm getting an auto alarm in the vents above you, and the bell should have just came back on. I'm dispatching LF incase this spreads. We've got possible ceiling fire. Squad 1, your primary orders are to evacuate that lab now, do Med outside. if neccessary set up the MTT*"

I sound the alarm to station one.
"Lightforce 1, respond to James High in Phoxlind for an automatic heat alarm above the chem lab explosion. S-1 on scene"

"Got it!"

*I head to the classroom with my extinguisher.*

"Alright guys, you gotta get out now. Just follow me. There could be fire somewhere."

*I escort ervyone out of the building.*

"I'll check for injuries until the LF arrives."

"Davis, you can't walk people outta there, most of them shouldn't even be standing. Don't even attempt to walk them out"

"Got it, than what should I do? Should I wait for Ridgeback? Can I carry people?"

"McGuire to Davis, what is the location of the lab? I can just grab SCBA and if it's on the first floor, I can help bring them out on the stretcher. If it's second floor I can bring a stair chair up."

"Pumper 11 on scene"
*I wind down the Q and park in front of the school. I engage the pump and get out of the engine quickly closing the door behind me. I grab my turnouts and put them on along with my SCBA. I then get a supply line and hook it up to the closest hydrant and grab 2 crosslays one after the other.*
"Alright, we got water. I radio to LT. Ewan, 'Lt. Raven, you need help with those kids? Do you see anything?'"
*I grab a crosslay just in case of a fire so I could back them up.*

"McGuire, it's on the 1st floor. Just get on SCBA and you can come and help. I haven't checked them for wounds yet, but I will when I come out. Hanahan, you and your guys schould check for any signs of fire."

"10-4. I'm bringing my line in Can someone bring a TIC?"
*I bring in my line and start looking around the building. I see the Squad crew but I feel a bit of heat coming from one of the rooms on the side of my face. I look over into each room and see some smoke coming out of the vent.*
Over the Radio "Squad 1, I got smoke coming out of the vent at room 109, it could be in room 110. I'm checking now."
*I go into room 110 and see nothing.*
"Anders, can you get a TIC over here please? If you can, bring something to knock a wall down. I'm near room 110."

"Received Davis, I'll be with you in a moment."

*I walk around to the side of BLS-1 and put on a helmet. I get a backboard, and the reeves onto the backboard roll the stretcher over by the squad. I open a roll-up door and get out SCBA. I throw it over my shoulders and tighten with the straps. I put on the mask, then helmet, start the airflow, and check the meter is in green. I shut the door and walk into the school the lab where i find the squad-1 crew*

"Guys, it's your call put I'd recommend one of you get the Medical Tent from your truck, just to keep them out of the rain. The rest of you, help me check the most serious injury. I'll bring the most serious out on the stretcher and get him straight into BLS-1. Any of them complaining of back pain, get them on the backboard and two of you carry him/her out. If they don't have back pain and aren't as serious, two of you take one out with the reeves and we'll repeat until everybody's out. Sound good?"

(ON The Radio:)
"McGuire to Ridgeback, I'm inside. Just bring your stretcher in when you're ready. Plan is to bring the most serious out on the strecher and into the ambulance, the rest are going out on backboards or reeves."

"Ladder 1 on the scene, requesting assignment"
*i jump out grab an SCBA and put it on grab a set of irons and then wait for assignment.*

Anders bring in the TIC and I see heat signatures behind the wall.
"Alright...Bruce, can you open up the wall in 110?"

"whats the wall made of so i know what to grab?"
*i walk around to where the sledge hammer is grab 2 of them*

"Uhhhh....Sheetrock."
Over the radio Pumper 11 to Squad 1, we found the heat and we're going to break down the wall and extinguish.

*i grab 2 sledge hammers and run to room 110 to help Hannahan*
"Hannahan can you take a sledge hammer and break bits off so its not too much for me?"

I start breaking the wall with the sledgehammer and I see the fire.

"Lieutenant what do you want me to do?" I say with my muffled voice.

*i drop the hammer, and get behind Hannahan and help him wrestle the line*
"i gotcha bud!"

I quickly look to the vic's. "Lt, this one has 3rd degree burns covering 30% of his body. We need to evac him ASAP"

(That is sooo true....I get it now. Bruce we should use just sledghammers..)

((Find where it said for ladder 1 and Pumper 11 to respond only to be on stand by, if you can find where it said for you to respond then by all means show me... also, why are you cutting a hole in the building, there's no need, we had it under control, and where did you get orders to do so?))

I help Ridgeback get his SCBA on and put a smoke ejector and the truck's tool kit on the gurney, and help him wheel it up. Once there I see some fire, just consuming some binders and book bags, and extinguish them. "Davis, go downstairs and find a science room, it will have an emergency shower, find it, make room, and we'll do decon there."

(It was a heat alarm. We used the TIC and found the heat. It was a small fire and I was going to extinguish it. We broke the wall for extinguishing or venting......It could've also been for venting too (venting the heat out of the wall)sorry.)

**I Go around to the side of the engine and pull the triage bag out, and place the tarps down.**

"Send injured over here. Have all walking sit down on the green, even if their uninjured."

((If we're on standby, I'm setting up triage since it hasn't been done yet and you guys are inside.))

"Alright, the heat is being vented" I say over the radio.
*I go back outside and see if the Lt. needs me. Lt. Garcia, do you want me to help Squad 1 with the victims?

*after returning the TIC to the Ladder I walk up to Lt. Garcia to see if he needs help with anything "Lt. where do you need me"*

"You guys will be getting your orders from Lt. Raven right now. He has more information than I do."

"Triage set up. Don't transport anyone until they are set with the according level of injury."

I grab an SCBA and put it on my back tighten the straps and move in with my helmet on and perform a search. I listen to the fire bell ringing as I take a look at the school map Lt. Garcia gave me and I walk in to to the Science lab. "Hey, LT.? The Sprinklers aren't working in here. I don't see a stand... oh never mind, there's a standpipe right outside the door. I move in the lab and hear coughing. As I turn on my helmet light, I move behind the desk seeing a man on the ground. GALLIGANO TO GARCIA, GALLIGANO GARCIA! We've got a male teacher I'm bringing him out right now. I pick up the man, throw him up on my shoulder, putting my mask on his face, I crouch down and leave the building!

*Puts on SCBA tank and waits for orders.

*I run into the building and go to the room where Squad 1 is.
"Lt. Raven, I'm ready for your orders."
