SEV-1, SEV-2, Possibly STO to respond code 1 with public officer to James High for an all day firefighter teaching.
Period 1, 3 and 5 will be in class with workplace safety classes, teaching them about your PPE, and your jobs, Before school, Recess, Lunch, After school will all be to show them the trucks, do whatever you want. They have a table in the Lobby the PO has full of stuff for the ERT, so no one needs to man that. Have fun guys, you'll be out of service form 0800-1530h today, so make your time useful, you've got an hour for each class, 25mins for recess, hour for lunch, and homeroom period is at 0845 till 0900

(Promo officer is already there, weather is nice and decent temp, it's also 0800 when you guys arrive there)

*I walk out to the SEV and throw my gear and some extra gear into the truck and an old car door we had sitting around then I hop in the drivers seat*
"Sev-1 OOS till till 1530hrs out at the school"
*I pull up to the school and park the truck and grab the mic*
"Sev-1 to Sev-2 how do you want to handle this. We have a full hour for class so I say we just bring them out I'll go over some PPE stuff we use and some of my nifty HRES gear. Mitch can go over the trucks and some medical stuff and you two can go over the part everyone likes the fire fighting aspect and how you do it and what you do hows that sound?"

*As i'm sitting there waiting for a response I see Don our Public Officer Lt. in the lobby so i decide to walk in and talk to him*
'Hey Lt. whats up today. so this is what i figured it's a beautiful day out so lets take a spot in the parking lot block it off and bring the kids out and do it out there. I figure you can go into the classes do a quick intro and bring them out to us how does that sound'

'Okay sounds good I'll start hauling in some PPE I got an ideal why don't you talk to the principle see if we can bring the trucks to the recess field to show them off a little during recess thats way we can show it off to everyone at once.'
*I head about back to the truck and grab my turnout gear and a set of the lightweight gear and take it in and set it at the table for now*

'It's a high school, they don't have a recess field, the students either hang aorund, or go to the store, there's a rugby/soccer field over there, but the trucks would wreck it. Park it in front, I'll get Reynolds to announce it today that we'll be out here all day'

'Okay sounds good I'm going to take these up to room 203 and set up some stuff and meet Mr. Smith.'
*I grab the turnouts and walk up to room 203 the teacher must be in the bathroom or something because he's not in the room. I grab my portable*
"Mitch I'm up in 203 with turnouts what else do you want to bring up? I'll come back down if you need help BREAk Sev-2 we got some turnouts up here already you can bring up what you want from your truck what ever you think is cool in fact I forgot a SCBA grab one or two to bring up so we can demonstrate and a mask"

*Calls Moon's cellphone*
'Moon its Zach From PD my daughter has a Doctors appointment today and i was wondering if you could drive her back to the complex if you guys have the room and time it would really help me out.'

*I pick up my phone*
'Uh yeah sure no problem call just to make sure the school knows were not stealing a child'
*I laugh to myself*

'Ok, Thanks Moon i owe you one and ill let the school know. You remember what she looks like?'

'Nope not at all I was pretty much assuming it'd be the girl that walks over and hops in the truck'
*I chuckle to myself*

*I laugh at this too*
'Just making sure. Shes Eurasian and has a slight birth defect so she should be easy to spot. Just Look for the Eurasian girl with Heterochromia.'

'Right got it not problem'
*I hang up my phone*

*I call the School to inform them about my daughter leaving with Cressler Then i Call Katherine telling her that she would be leaving with Moon and to meet him by the Fire Trucks*

" This should be fun Moon. I have an idea though. When we show the trucks we could drive in with lights and sires on. I could add a cool effect. I'll meet you in the classroom, I'll take some ALS gear aswell."

I open the locker pull the ALS gear out, the backboard and some oxygen. I also grab the dummy so we can show some procedures. I walk up the stairs with everything and get it set up in the classroom. I run back down to the SEV, pull up my bunker pants and walk back.

'Hey whats up'
*I say as I see mitch walk in and behind him who I can only assume is mr. smith*
'Hi are you mr. Smith.'

Smith: yes I am I assume your from ERT:FD

'Yep thats us I'm Moon Cressler and thats my co-pilot Mitch Daniels'

*I crack a smile*

'Well were from the Rescue Support Crew our partners from the fire support crew should be here later I'm not sure if there going to make it for the first class though. Do you have anything you need to do at the start of class or do you just want us to take it'

Smith: 'Nah we were just watching a movie in here you can take it when the bell rings'

'Okay sounds good so mitch how do you want to do this Lt. Chami said we can show off the trucks during recess and after school so we'll wait for that but what do you want to do first. I thought maybe we could do like a race to see who gets dressed the fastest then pretty much explain what all the parts are for. Then we can maybe go into med stuff at the end and if anyone wants I brought the extra light turnout gear they can try it out. Sound good?'

"That sounds good. I'll go down and get the SCBA so it is a full and fair race. "

I walk down grab the extra-light turnout gear and grab some SCBA from the locker. I walk back in carry them back up the stairs and into the room.

"Looks like we have 10 minutes to set up" I saw while looking at my watch

'Sounds good'
*I take my gear and set it up ready to go*
'Okay we'll make it a full race everything on except no air flowing through the SCBA just don't connect the hose first one to get everything on and tap the other person on the head wins'
*I laugh to myself*
'Then once we get geared up you go ahead an undress and get everything ready for the medic part while I explain what all the gear is what it is and how it protects us. Sound good?'

The children walk into the room looking kind of excited.
'Alright kids, I'm Mitch Daniels and I am a Firefighter/Paramedic for the ERT:FD. This is my partner Moon." Moon steps forward and introduces himself. Today we are going to teach you about some aspects of firefighting. How about we start with a little competition, how about a race?" I say with a little emphases.

The children count down and we start to race I pull on my nomex hood, step into the bunker pants and zip that up. I quickly put on my jack at do it up. Moon is pretty close at the moment so I continue as fast as I can. I sling the SCBA on put the mask on and check it is on properly. I pick up my helmet, put it on and tap Moon on the head just as he puts the mask on. The children cheer and I do a little victory dance. Moon and I take our gear off and I start to get the Medic stuff ready while Moon explains.

'Man you got me on that one thats okay I'm still a better in a burning building then you'
*I say with a laugh*
'Okay while mitch sets up some medic stuff to show you I'm going to go over all the equipment we use to keep safe. I take off my helmet*
'This is our helmet and does anyone know why the back is so long?'

*A kid in the back raises his hand*

'yes you in the back'

kid: to help protect your neck from failing stuff

'You are correct it protects us and our packs from any failing debris and of course our shields that fold down in the front protect our eyes when we don't have a mask on.'
*I place my helmet upside down on the ground.*
*I remove the nomex from my head.*
'Okay this is what we call a nomex because it's made out of nomex. You will see some places call it a baklava or a flash hood and some other stuff but you'll most often hear it referred to as a nomex. It helps protect us when were are inside a building fighting a fire it pretty much protects any skin from the neck up that isn't covered by our mask or jacket.'

*I put my nomex in my right cargo pocket. and pull the mask off my neck*

'This is the mask for our SCBA unit or Self Contained Breath Apparatus it has a monitor hear that gives us a rough estimate of how much air we have left without needing to look at our tank level it also on this side has a speaker so we can be heard through the mask and that brings me to our SCBA tanks and PASS alarm'

*I say as I pull the tank off my back and set it up on the front desk.*

'This is our lifeline inside a building without this it is almost impossible to function in a burning building. You have all been near a camp fire when smoke blows in your face thats annoying right? Now imagine it a million times worse.'

*Then I grab a hold of the PASS device*

'Does anyone know what this is.'

*They look at me blankly*

'This is what we call a PASS device'

*Then I start air flowing so it starts the device and I let it sit till the warning tones go off and I shake it and stop the air.*

'That was a warning tone if I would of let it go it sets of a 95 decibel high pitched tone that alerts that somewhere a firefighter is not moving and we have to go get them out. It's a sound you never want to hear. I heard it once we fighting a fire in a ware house and....'

*I trail off and tell a story about the building collapse*

'Anyway thats that.'

*I undo my coat.*

'This is part of what we call bunker gear or turnout gear which is the jacket pants and boots. This is our basic Personal Protection Equipment pretty much it doesn't matter what the call is where most likely going to be in this or at least part of it. It can withstand 500* of heat for 5 minutes without being damaged. It's mostly made out of nomex and kevlar it is water repellent I don't think i've ever been wet enough for it to come the whole way through so I'd argue its waterproof but they don't say it is so what ever. Last but not least our pants which is made out of the same stuff and we have think rubber boots. I'm sure you've seen the movies yes we really do just step into our boots and pull up our pants its part of our quick response because if we tried to put it on normally it would take us forever to get out the door.'

'Okay thats our basic firefighting gear and how we protect our selves my partner over here has set some stuff up we are both also paramedics so we can handle a wide range of medical emergencies as well and he's going to go into some of that stuff.'

"Thanks Moon."

I pull the ALS bag to the table. "Does anyone know what ALS stands for? Yes you in the front" "Advanced Life Support" he replies. You are correct sir I open the bag and pull the Penthrane. "Is anyone familiar with the green whistle?" They put their hands up. "This usually help with all the pain." I saw with a smile. "Moon is now going to help me with this fake patient involved in a car accident.

I get the backboard and slide it under him while Moon stabilizes his neck. Moon hooks him up to the EKG and we both continue talking to them. I put a neck brace on him and Moon says some things.

((Unless whats he name's appointment is after 3:30, you guys can't take her, since you all have to hang around till then before returning!))

*Walking the school hallway up to the classroom, I run into a student who notices I'm clearly not a regular here. He stops, looks at my badge*
'You a cop?' He asks me?
'No, I'm the ERT's Public officer, we're doing workplace safety and showing off some of our stuff from the fire department outside of class time today.. Why, you interested?'
'Yeah, I wanna become a firefighter... Wait you said workplace safety?'
'Yeah, are you in any classes?'
'Today, third period... What're they doing?'
'Showing off some equipment, how stuff works, then showing off the trucks out front... I'm just headed up actually now to talk to them about the ERT, then we're gonna take them down to the trucks before the period ends. I think you'd find it ineteresting'
'That's cool man, thanks.'
*We walk in opposite directions, and I enter 203 very quietly watching the guys demonstrate*

(we'll assume it's after 3:30 he didn't really tell me a time)

*I pull out a Laryngoscopes and tupe*

'If the patient isn't breathing we have to use this to help them mechanically breath'
*I say as I put the tube down the patients throat and pull out an scope and attach a bag*

'No was have the airway and breathing secured which is the most important part because even if everything else is working right if you can't breath you can't live.'

*I see Lt. walk in.*

'Hey you want to take them down to the trucks and we'll clean up here and meet you down there?'

(Think next time, we don't need to go into the treatment, this isn't ALS show and tell, it's workplace safety, PPE show and tell)

'If it's fine with the teacher, sure'
*Mr. Smith nods approval*
'Alright guys, lets come down to the front, I've got some trucks parked out front, the guys will be down right after you guys to answer questions, show you guys more, and have some more fun. Also, if you're interested in joining the ERT, we hire for lots more than just this, I've got a booth in the lobby all day, plus I'll answer any questions you've got if you want to ask them to me after we get downstairs'
*I bring them out to the SEVs parked in the fire lane. A few of the firefighters follow on my tail and start to answer questions as I turn on the lights and start to open equipment doors*

(well it says workplace safet ppe AND your jobs so i sorta figured this fell into AND our jobs and we needed a time filler so we don't do the hole day without the other SEV)

*I walk down after we clean up and set up for the next class Lt. is already showing some stuff off and he motions to us to take over*

'Okay this is our truck it's a rescue support truck basically that means if someone needs rescued we either go or we go with another larger truck to help out.'

*I watch mitch hop in the front and turn the lights on and play with the siren a bit*

'What should you do when you see lights or hear sirens.'

Kids: 'Pull over to the right'

'Good by pulling over to the right you allow us to go help whoever needs help faster and it avoids us hitting you and making another accident. Think if it was your house on fire or you in an accident you'd want everyone to get out of our way so we can help you so remember that when you see us.'

'Okay mitch you want to finish up we got about 4 minutes until the bell.'

*I listen as mitch finishes describing some stuff*

'Okay remember we will be here all day and after school till 3:30 and the Lt. will be in the lobby if you have any more questions.'

*I follow the kids inside and back up to mr. smiths room*

((Remember this is a high school, not grade 2, they aren't really kids, they're more of young adults, they're pretty much all graduating next year. Also just godmod SEV2 if they don't show up soon ))

(kids was shorter to type then young adults haha and compared to me there still kids)

*I secure our gear in the back of the room and head down to the lobby to hang out with the Lt. since we have an hour break between 1st and 3rd period.*

'Hiya!'

'Hey were just about to go up to the class room for 3rd period me and mitch did the first class you can take this one if you want and we'll split the last one'

'Okay sounds good I guess we'll pretty much do the same thing me and mitch did the first time if you have any extra PPE stuff you want to bring from your truck grab it bring you turnouts and meet me in class'

*I walk up stairs to Mr. Smiths room*

'Hey whats up our other truck showed up so were going to have another firefighter here this time'

Smith: 'Okay sounds good'

*I walk outside and grab my turnout pants and helmet and put them on then grab my coat and head upstairs*
'Hi guys!
Smith: Nice to meet you
Nice to meet you to!'
*shakes hand*

*The 3rd period bell rings and everyone walks in*

'Hello I am Firefighter/Paramedic with ERT:FD this is my partner Mitch Daniels he is also a FF/Medic and this is Austin Botfish he is a FF/EMT. Were going to do something fun to start it off me and Austin are going to race to see how quick we can don full turnout gear and get our packs on.'

*We line up behind our gear and Mitch counts down. We hurry into a gear and I get my mask on throw my helmet on and I tap austin on the head right before he gets his helmet on*

'Looks like I win. Okay Austin why don't you go through all the turnout gear and explain it while I get undressed and go get ready downstairs at the trucks'

'Hello everyone! I'm Austin Botfish and an FF/EMT for the ERT FD and here is another fiefighter his name is Mitch daneils hes an FF/Medic and last but not least Moon Cressler hes the FF/SAR for ERT FD and today we are gonna talk about our trucks.
We have 1 station the other one is in construction and i am gonna tell you what they do. we have Pumper 11, Ladder 1, Rescue Ambulance 1, SEV-1, SEV-2, STO, S1C, and squad-1.

Pumper-11 is an ALS fire fighting rig it is called to any sort of fires

Ladder 1 responds to high buildings for structure fires or high rescue

RA-1 is an ambulance mainly used for rehab

SEV-1 is rescue support

SEV-2 is fire support

the STO is just mainly a supervisor

S1C is our station chief

and Squad-1 is for rescue I used to be on that truck.

Ok, so, if there was a fire who would be dispatched?'

Kid in back: The ladder?

'Yes if it was a big fire. Pumper-11 and SEV-2 would also be dispatched, maybe even the Squad. Well, I am gonna let you guys get back to school. Bye!

*We walk outside and talk to Mr. Smith*
'Well, we are gonna head back to the station 'cause there is a possible fire and we are on standbye'
Mr. Smith: ok, thank you for coming!
'No problem!'
*We put all our gearr away and start our trucks up and head back*

"SEV-1 cleared and back in service. BREAK SEV-2 is on standby for a possible fire"

*After the end of the day and all the kids have clear out around 3:25 I pack up the gear and make sure we got Zach's daughter in the back and we head back tot he station.*
"Sev's to COPA mark us back in service SEV-2 on stand by Sev-1 returning to normal"

You guys are not on standby.... I told oyu stay at the school unless there is a fire, then we'll call you out form the school, going back to the station, please read what i say... You were not needed for an automatic alarm. We dispatch the light force to check it out, if it's a big fire, then we'll call for backup, if not, then we wont...

I know you all wanted to go on a call, but i figured stay at the school, play around with yourselves a bit, and if there is a fire, and they need backup, then we'll call in support trucks. Rescue support wouldn't have left the school unless we needed rescue. Yes if it was a large fire you would have left, but now you'll all be sitting at the station doing nothing, to hear that there probably won't be a call... When COPA puts you out of service means you're out of service until COPA says otherwise...

I understand you were done, but you rushed through the last bit so you could wait at the station to do nothing... You weren't even put on standby by COPA, you just assumed it, which is a waste of your time.
