7 confirmed dead in the bombing. At least 10 dead in the shooting. The shooter has been reported as looking nordic, and dressed in a police uniform. He reportedly had a fully automatic weapon. There are helicopter picture of at least 10 bodies floating in the water, on the shore of Utøya island.

We are strictly speaking not neutral. We have forces in Afghanistan, and Norwegian F-16 were some of the most active in Libya.

The police just updated the number of dead from the shooting at the summer camp... The latest number is at least 80 killed. Kids between 14 and 25...

The man behind it all is 32 year old man, right wing extremist. He is suspected of being behind the bombing as well. The camp he attacked was the summer camp for the Norwegian Labor Party's youth organisation.

I...just don't know what to say. The whole country is in shock. At the press conference all the journalists were too stunned to ask questions after the police released the number of killed.

    80 kids...

EDIT: They caught the man alive. He's being questioned.

7 confirmed dead from the bomb. Unknown number missing. 30 injured in hospital.

Total: 93 dead, 96 injured in hospital. At least 5 missing.

The search for missing goes on at Utøya. The search for missing in the government offices are hampered by dangerous conditions due to the structural state of the building.

Turns out a plain clothed police officer are among the dead. He was stationed at Utøya for security. He was the stepbrother of the Crown Princess.

There will be a court hearing today. It's been announced that it will be open to the public. I hope it won't, that'll give him an audience, which is exactly what he wants.

We don't have armed police. Some of the cars have pistols locket in them, most don't. Seems he was off duty, hired to head up security. He was one of the first killed.

The number of dead at Utøya has been revised to 68. Seems in the chaos the number got higher than it was.

Tonight Norway took to the streets and marched for peace. 200.000 marched in Oslo, 15.000 in Bergen, 20.000 in Trondheim, and I marched with 75.000 in Stavanger. With us marched the spokesperson for the Muslim Council in Rogaland (our state).

Like the Crown Price said in his speech, "tonight the streets are filled with love." And the leader of the youth organisation, who himself escaped Utøya, "our youth was not killed so that we could hate more." My favorite quote though came from a girl who had escape Utøya after seeing 10 people killed right next to her: "If one man can show that much hate, imagine how much love we can show together."

Very sad, this whole story and all.

But you know what is sadder? People's (or at least Americans) Priorities. This is what I mean:

Everybody on facebook was all saying "RIP Amy Winehouse". The first facebook post I saw that was all related to these attacks was by my friend, 2 days after the attacks, and her post was calling out how people are saying RIP Amy Winehouse and not even acknowledging the kids or anything about Norway.

It's just sad. These kids, who COULD have had bright futures, were killed for absolutely no reason other than to cause terror. People today should be happy that they could have even listened to Amy Winehouse music (Which im not a fan of), when these kids aren't even going to be able to pursue their dreams or whatever.

    Here's what my friend said:

rip amy winehouse? how about rip to all of the kids who died in norway

Meh, the media has the attention span of a kid with ADHD, who have just consumed copious amounts of caffeine and sugar. It's the same everywhere. They'll go "Ooo! Shiny thing!" every time something new happens, no matter the size.

But anyway, the guy might be charged with crimes against humanity. That chapter was added to out criminal code in 2008 (I think to facilitate the conviction of war criminals from Kosovo), and can send him to jail for 30 years. That is the longest you can send someone to jail here, unless they are sentenced to involuntary commitment, in which case the sentence can in theory be extended indefinitely. Note that involuntary commitment does not mean he was insane. Involuntary commitment (forvaring) here means prison. If he was insane, he'll be sentenced to forced psychiatric help. But I doubt he will.

The Norwegian prison system focuses on treatment, not punishment. If a man is in prison, he's a burden on society. Just think how much it costs to keep him there, what with food, clothes, electricity, the cost of the jail, the cost of the guards... If the system can treat that man, give him job training; so that when he gets out of jail he doesn't commit more crime, but gets a job. Having that job, he provides a service or makes a product, and pays taxes. That man has then turned from a expenditure, to a productive member of society. Not to mention the humanist aspect of it! Many need treatment for drug addictions for example.

I like that system. And it has worked for us.

Personally, my system idea is this:
You go to jail, you don't get anything more than a wooden plank for your bed, and you have a toilet/sink in your cell. You have the option to work though. You work 10 hours a week, you can afford a mattress. You work 15, you get another luxury, and it continues to 40 hours a week. You'll end up making when it comes down to it about half of minimum wage, but the other half covers the food and electricity and taxes you have to pay. You'll be working a real job too, making something, or doing something important, not out breaking rocks, or some meaningless task. That way you gain skills and learn how to function in a society, since your stay in prison is a mini society.

I almost would rather not have the guy go to jail. Probaly tougher on the streets than that jail.

    Haters gonna hate Razz

I think our system is good, and that it works. They're criminals yes, but they are human beeings. The US has the largest prison population in the world, about 756 per 100.000. In Texas, alomost 1 out of 22 adults are in jail or on probabtion. I'd say that system isn't working as it should.

But let's not turn this into a discussion about prison systems.

Many states are eliminating the death penalty. Texas put in an express line.

This is probably the wrong place for that joke, but eh, we're on the subject of Texas and prisons.
