Nope he was on duty, and he wasn't overhauling. He did an excessive amount of damage at a simple odor/electrical investigation.
Basically, they called 911 because there was an electrical odor coming from something near the wall, that was plugged in, so they unplugged it and called. By the time the Vollys got there, the smell began to go away, but they say, well let's just check to be sure. So, the wife expects that they are just going to get their thermal imaging camera and check the wall. (She assumed this would be done because her husband is a firefighter somewhere).
So they went out, instead of coming back with a thermal camera, they come back with various tools (Pike pole, halligan, axe, etc.) They go in the room where the smell was, destroy the wall and find nothing. They go to the next room, destroy the wall and find nothing (And now there is a hole in the wall from one room to another).
So they go downstairs to the basement, they tear down an area of the ceiling to check for anything. They find nothing.
They go upstairs to the room above the one that had the smell, the break down part of that wall, and find nothing.
Now, doing that may be acceptable IF there were no thermal imaging cameras. But, there were a total of 6 Thermal imaging cameras, fully charged and working on the scene that could have been used, and would've resulted in FAR less damage to the home.
It's that kind of person that just give Vollys a bad name.
No offense to any volly's here, I'm sure you all do a great job, but that's the reason I will never live in a Volly town. It's not so much that as it is waiting for everybody to drive to the station then, then wait for enough people to assemble, then drive to the call.
I had the exact same problem once, but it was a ceiling fan. A thermal imaging camera was used, and there was no damage, the only damage was that my fan could not be used. But that's not something the FD did, that's just the result of an overheating motor.
Alright my little rant here is done. Volunteers here on ERT, please don't take offense to that or my choice of never living in a volunteer town. It's just my personal belief and choice.
