And most college instructors actually like teaching. My main criminal justice instructor. . . well the only one. lol Was the Police Chief here in hot springs and a career police officer for HSPD.

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
That's whats nice about college. Once you know what you want to do, you actually get taught by people with experience in that field which can make it a lot more interesting.
My brother went to college for Criminal Justice, and whenever his teacher was locked out of his room, he would just pick the lock.
I'm going for Fire Science, and for the first time ever, I actually can't wait for school, because it will be college where I can finally learn what I want and need, and not some crap like photosynthesis that I will never need in my life.
I think once I'm a career firefighter, I'm going to learn to become an electrician. They get paid really good depending on the size of the job, and the as a career firefighter you work, what? 2, 3, 4 days of the week? And in firefighting, that can help if it's something like an electrical condition or whatever.

I'm looking at New Jersey City University In Jersey City, NJ. Supposed to have a very good Fire Science program, and the only place around here that has fire science other than a county/community college.
My longterm goal is to become a fire/arson investigator.

I just want to go to my local community college and take three courses. Fire Science, RN, and Paramedics class. I want to at least retire being a battalion chief in the fire service. The only downside to that is that I don't think Battalion chiefs can into burning buildings....just wait outside and watch what's going on from the outside. Anyway, that's my goal.

Sorry to get off that topic, but thought this was pretty interesting:

( sorry this is so long, but its pretty informational)i hate to bust your bubble, but your never gonna be able to be a battalion chief, for a paid department im assuming your talking about cuz ive never heard of battalion chiefs for vollys..the fire science degree and paramedicene are great and the fire science is almost requried, the paramedicene is just great for you. But to be a hief your 99.99% if not 100% going to need some sort of business managment bachelor degree. everyone is requring you to have those in order to move up the ranks because your right the chiefs, especially at the highest ranks dont go out on alls, unless its probably like a 3+ alarm. The chiefs role now adays is pretty much budget management. Sitting in your office and writing out your budget, who to fire, who to hire..pretty much that. In my case im going to a 2 year college for fire science and then transfering to a large college for about 2-3 years for either buisness management or public policy which are pretty much the same

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
Here it works differently. Chiefs go through the ranks like everyone else usually, and it's only the top dogs that do that kinda stuff. Station chiefs and what not don't hire/fire anyone... Basically it's a lot like the ERT rank system here where the Fire OC can do that stuff, and maybe a deputy or two, but no one else below him.

Batt. Chiefs do need a degree but they go on fire assignments like all structure fire calls whether it be a precautionary assignment or a two alarm. They do admin work but they sometimes spend time waiting for a call by going to different stations and things down here haha. I do plan to get my bachelor's soon but not just yet haha.

yea, im getting my bachelors degree before i even start my carrer because if i dont i will keep telling myself ill go back to school and get it when i never will, or god forbid i get injured on the job, or for some reason the recession hits even harder and all cities go volly or something, i still have the bachelors degree to fall back onJ. Re: Random Hang Out Topic
Well ERT Leadership for fire works so every fire truck will have a truck officer, smaller two or three people units will have senior officers. The Truck officer will be a Lt, or higher. The Senior officer will just be the longest serving officer. Each Task force will be given an officer, either of Lt. Or Capt Rank. Each Station will be given a chief, either of Station Chief, or Deputy Chief rank. You stop doing real work at the station chief level.

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
Thats the only bad thing about a Vol. dept is that people get there, they get the title of firefighter and then decide yep thats what they wanted and never show up again or hardly show up at all. I dont have anything against Vol depts as long as they are dedicated rather than those who just want to ride on an engine and look cool. I have spent my life dedicated to Emergency Service and that would just Piss me off if I had 25 people and only 10 that showed up..

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
(yeah well our dept you have to be there for like 25% of the calls meetings or parade durng the year or chances are you get kicked out obviously some exceptions are made)
We usually get a good turnout for fires but if we have AFA's or MVA's or CO alarms it's usually a low turnout.

yea, in addition to that, i mean we only have 4 trucks, the yellow one never leaves unless a tanker is requested or its a grass fire..typically only the red pumper and the rescue go on anything, cuz we recieve muatail aid, and of coarse the squad goes out on ems runs http://www.mortonfire.org/apparatus.html

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
Medical-Truck 2 (Quint), ALS 1 or 2/ALS 1 or 2 and PM car.
MVA-Truck 2 and however many medical personal is needed.
Fire Alarm-Chief, Tower 1, Truck 2, ALS 1 or 2, sometimes Deputy Chief, and engines from Station 3 if needed.
Car Fire-Truck 2, ambulance, etc.
Pretty much all we get around here, mostly medicals. Like today, one of our janitors had breathing problems, so an ambulance and quint responded. I just heard the sirens, they sounded close, but was unaware that it was at the school until later.

the only time we have a good response is when we have a confirmed fire in our town then the whistle blares like 12 times we have one of the horns thats like a super train horn and we have a button in the station if the fires rippin we just lay on that thing till the air runs out and then we get about 20 people but thats the only time we get a good turnout

Re: Random Hang Out Topic
Cool! Can you ride on the engine or anything else? You should ask your dad to start one up! Its really fun if everything is set up correctly haha.

Ya, it would be awesome. No, the reason I can ride on the ambulance is because technically it's a service owned by the fire fighters, not the city, so it's not a city vehicle, which is why I can ride on Ems.

My dad is also a firefighter at a refinary (I believe I've said that many times before),and I wish I could ride with them. They just have a bunch of stand-bys though. I think since my dad joined the department in June, I don't think he's gotton one fire call.
