Attempted Suicide at City Hall

*Hearing the dispatch over the M1 radios, I motion for the team to get moving*
"You heard him, get going, Don't forget the cadet at the hospital. I'll get Goodricht to message him directly to be ready."
*They turn and leave*

"Captain 1 arriving, security has perimeter secure, slow any PD units to code 1."

'Busy today.'
*The guy gets the cab down quickly and makes sure everything is down as
we all get our gear on. I get mine on soon after Mitch gets in and I get
in too.*
'C'mon Matthews.'
"Rescue 1 en route."

*I get off the phone with a PESS officer at the 8th floor looking out*
"Units, this is Burke, I have confirmation he is alive, though consciousness is questionable at this point. He is led flat on the protruding facade of the eighth floor"

'Okay, lets get the zrig set up when we get there so uh Mitch, bring your bag (ALS bag) and Matthews, help me get set up with the z-rig then when Bruce from L1 gets there, we'll lower him down. I'll watch out the window for Bruce and Mitch, you're going to be on the backup line while Tim will be on the main line after we get it set up.'
*I sit back while looking at updates trying to gather as much info as I can.*

"Got it. Rescue 1 to COPA, any info if he is a psych patient? Or any other conditions?"

I grab the ALS bag and fling it over my shoulder, and walk with Hannahan.

( He is dangling from the 8th floor of city hall attempting to commit suicide Mitch. That didnt answer your question )

"We've got nothing on him. He's an unknown"

"Medic 1 is on scene" I say as I look through the window up front and see all the flashing lights.
I grab the stretcher, trauma bag, airway bag, and portable suction and pull the stretcher out of the back. I also grab a back board and C-collar and head straps and throw that on the stretcher also. I pull my gloves over my hands and put them on.
"Medic 1 to Rescue 1 when you reach the patient give us a run down on his possible injuries on your way down."

' alright hannahan'

* i throw my coat over my shoulders and button it up as we continue to the scene*

' man, this seems like a long ride'

((I was waiting for the Rescue to get on scene first because they responded first, but okay))

*I turn off the siren as I pull into the scene. I press the anti-theft button, idling the ambulance, then I take the keys out of the ignition and slip them into my pocket as I pick up the radio mic off the clip on the dashboard*

"EMS-1's out."

*I open my door and step out, slamming it behind me. I look up at the man dangling on the 8th floor, then walk around the front of the ambulance to the cabinet. I get the jumpbag and throw it over my shoulder.*

'Just throw everything on the stretcher. Probably very little we can do until Fire gets here.'

*I walk to the rear doors, open them up, and pull out the stretcher. I shut the doors, then roll the stretcher to the cabinet with the long boards. I lay one on the stretcher, and throw the bag with straps on top of it. I lay the jumpbag on top of the board, then Kelly puts the chart on that.*

"EMS-1 to Rescue, yeah, he's dangling there, 8th floor. What's your location, and doesn't appear to be too much we can do at this time, so what's your pleasure for us?"

*We get on scene soon and Mitch parks. I get out of the truck and pull my gloves on while looking up.*
'Alright zrig, ALS bag, and harness. I'll get the harness.'
*I go to the side compartment of the truck open it and grab the harness out and the zrig equipment and hand it to Tim. I get the ALS bag and
give that to Mitch and I radio to COPA.*
"Rescue 1 COPA with the update. We're on scene. We have the guy on the eighth floor hanging on still and he's uh not moving. Ladder 1 when you get here, get some HRES gear on and we'll get you hooked up to grab the guy from above. We'll go to the ninth floor and wait for you there K."
'Alright let's get this set up guys. Ninth floor. Hey Doug. We're going to the ninth floor. Just bring you're stair chari for now. I don't think you wanna bring him down in that haha.'

"Understood, McEvoy is rolling there now (with at least Jessica I believe) and he's trained HRES, so he'll be up there with you in a bit. Not every day you get to dangle your chief out of a window"

"Awesome COPA! Alright Hannahan."

I stay with Hannahan and wait to see what he does.

(the elevator is working plus he needs to have smr percautions in place and a stairchair won't do that)

(Ok then)
'Alright guys, lets head up.'
*I go inside of the seemingly empty lobby and as we hook a right, we go down the hallway to get to the elevator. I press the up button and hold the door open for everyone.*

* i grab the harness from hannahan and walk with them into the lobby*

' man, this feels errey in here, almost like in a movie and then an explosion will follow or somethin'

* i head into the elevator and turn my portable's volume down as we asscend*

*As we come roaring up onscene I shut off the siren and kill the lights.*

"Ladder 1 onscene. BREAK. Ladder 1 to Rescue 1, Do you guys need me to grab anything?"

*I hop out of the ladder and turn on my portable. I then grab my turnout jacket and my helmet and my HRES rope rescue bag. I then wait for a response from the rescue.*

"Just your HRES gear and some strength. This guy look unconscious but I don't want to take any chances so we'll take the ninth floor and well you will make your way down. That's the plan."
*We get to the ninth floor and we get past some people still looking out the window and I start to clear the room.*
'Alright guys, we're gonna use this room to grab the man down there so if everyone can give us some space so we can, that would be great. Thanks guys.'
*I take out the tools for setting up the zrig and get started. I start looking around looking for something strong I could hook the carabiner up to and decide to hook it up to an outside stud on one side of the room.*
'Hey Tim, put the harness down and can you hook that carabiner and pulley up to the other stud on that side for me? Get the uh prusik loops in there too. Just unravel those two small uh rope knots in the bag and clip it into the carabiner along with the main rope. Mitch, when Ladder 1 guys get up here, harness the guy who's going down up and make sure it's tight on him. Clip the main rope on him and make sure that's on him well too.'

"Rescue, recommend you have a man on the 8th floor to intercept him through the window if possible?"

"Negative. If we try to reach out the window, he may come to and AMS may kick in, resulting in screaming, swinging, and we'll have a unstable hold on him if he does that. It's better for our guy to wrap around him just to be sure. That's how I view it though."

"Copy that, I am on my way up."

*I walk quickly into the building with my gear and wait for the elevator.(

"Ok Hannahan." I say while helping set-up the zrig.

*I get in the elevator and go up to the 9th floor. I then get out and walk to where Hannahan and daniels are at.*

'Hey Guys hows it going?'

'Medic 1 to fire command is it ok if we start our way up to the 9th floor so we can start patient care when y'all pull him in.'

((Please excuse my possibly abbreviated posts. I'll have to be posting her from my phone for the weekend))

*I begin to pull the foot end of the stretcher toward the building and into the lobby*

"EMS-1 to rescue, just confirm, you want us on floor 8 or 9? Where you bringing him in?"

*I continue into the elevator lobby with Kelly and Mark, and push the call button and wait for the elevator and rescues response*

"We're bringing him into the ninth floor so come up there."
*I look back and I see Chris.*
'Hey, long time no see! How you been man? Hey Mitch, lets get that harness on him.'
*I look out of the window and down and see him clipped on the edge of something sharp, something that's gripping his shirt causing it to be entangled.*
'Huh, never noticed that. Hey Chris, you have a pocket knife on ya?'

'thats likewise! I've been good, how have you been?'

*i walk over and drop my bag and stuff*

'Yupp, I always have one.'

*I pull out my knife.*

* i take the carabeiner from john and take it and wrap it around the stud and pull it tight and give it a yank to make sure its snug*

' we're all set down here john'

* i walk back up to the rest of the group and help hook mcevoy into the harness*

'Huh... It's not everyday your chief will hang out a window and you guys are holding onto me. Just don't drop me. So are we gonna lower this guy to the ground floor or a floor below him?'

' well chief, im not positive we have enough line here to lower 8 floors, so why dont we send you down, and we can either hoist both of you back up here, or if we can access a window we can have you strap him and send him to us, its up the the LT, and the situation i suppose'

* i take my jacket off and take my portable in the harness and throw it around me and check the lines as the chief gets in the harness*

'Yeah, Imma just let him down a floor. On 7.'
*I look back at Doug and Jeffery*
'Hey guys, Imma just let him down at the seventh floor.'
*I lok at Chris.*
'You ready?'

'Sure, as I'll ever be. I'm ready when you guys are.'

'Alright Mitch check him again will ya. Everything should be nice and snug. Don't want anything slipping.'
*I direct my attention to Chris.*
'Reason I asked was because his shirt may be entangled down there so it could be hard to actually grab onto him and move him so you may have to cut his shirt. Whatever you think is best when you get down there.'
*Mitch gives me the thumbs up and I bring Chris to the window.*
'Alright man, wheneer you're ready, go on down and grab him and put him in the seventh floor window.'
*I go to doug.*
'Hey he's going to be dropped off at the seveth floor. Sorry about that so...can you just head down there and when he gets down there, pull the guy in.'
*I look at Mitch.*
'Mitch, grab that backup line. If something bad happens, just let it go and it should stop the chief from falling.'
"Rescue 1 COPA, we're starting rescue operations of the man on the eighth floor and lowering him down to the seventh."

' hannahan, what do you want me to do? head down with ems to bring him in the window?'

'Nah, grab hte main line up here while Mitch has the backup line. I'll go down with EMS.'

' alright'

* i grab my gloves and grab the main line and keep friction on it as chris beings to descend*

' you all good chirs?' i yell out

* i keep my hand tight around the line and lower him slowly*

'I'm doing pretty good, I'm still hanging out a damn building though.'

*I think to myself what i've got myself into again. ahaha*

"Chris, notify us when you have the subject. Window below you guys are open so we'll grab him after you lower him." I say after taking the stairs to the seventh floor. I wait anxiously for the man to be lowered so EMS can get to him.*

'Im about to him!'

*i get lowered further and grab the guy and hook him in.*

'Ive got him keep lowering me to the 7th floor.'

' copy that'

' yell out how many more feet you need'

* i let my grip off of the chief's line and slowly let it lower as i wait to see how much more space he needs*



( lets try to finish this tomorrow so we can jump to the new site )

'I'd say about 5 more feet!'

*I look down to the 7th floor and see i keep inching closer while I look back at the guy to see if he is alright*

' alright!'

' mitch, 5 more feet'

* i loosen my grip and estimate about 4 feet to be safe and look down and see the chief swinging towards the window and stepping in*

" rescue 1 matthews to rescue 1 command, mcevoy is down on the 7th floor, safely inside"

* i give slak on the lin e so the chief can enter the room comfortably, and so does mitch*

' hey good job guys, that was well done'

*As McEvoy comes into the building on floor 7, we roll the stretcher up the hallway to the outside of the room he came into. I leave teh stretcher in the hallway, then pull the jumpbag off and enter the room, I stand in the doorway and nod to McEvoy*

'Hello Chief McEvoy. How we doing in here? How's he looking?'

" matthews to mcevoy, mind having someone release you and we can pull both your lines back up"

* i feel tension as mcevoy moves around the room and give him as much slak as i can*

'Well he's still knocked out thankfully so he didn't get combative. Didn't really get his vitals when i was coming down. He is breathing though.'

*I start to unhook myself from the harness and take off the harness.*

'I'm unhooked you guys can pull back up the rope. The medics are tending to the guy.'

to medics. 'You guys need me to do something?'

' alright guys, lets get this packed up and head home ( new site!!)'

* i start to pull in both the back up and main lines and grab the carabeniers in and hand the back up for mitch to pack up, i take the main line, and hannahan begins to disasamble the z rig*

'Ahh, no worries. Didn't expect you to do much of an assessment while your dangling from a rope 70 feet above the ground.'

*I laugh slightly and approach the unconscious patient laying on his back on the floor. I kneel down dropping the jumpbag next to me. Suspecting possible possible spinal injury, I push the jaw forward with my thumbs, and index fingers near the mouth opening to open the airway. I listen to and watch the chest for breathing, sounds and appears normal.*

'How'd you find him? Just dangling or laying or what?'

'Dangling.'
