Anyway, I digress. I just picked up Dangerous Waters again after having forgotten about it for a while. It's a brilliant game. Though this is a game for those who're looking for realism, not constant action.

Dangerous Waters
So, anybody else play Dangerous Waters? Or any other naval combat sims for that matter. I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hunter series as well. Or up until the last one, which is ruined by the copy protection. You even have to crack legit copies for them to be playable -_-

Re: Dangerous Waters
You command either a Seawolf class or 688 (Los Angeles) class US nuke fast attack sub, or a Russian Akula Nuke fast attack sub, or a Russian or Chinese Kilo class diesel/electric sub, or a FFG7 (Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate), a MH-60 Sea Hawk ASW helo, or a P3-Orion ASW/Navel patrol aircraft.J. Hannahan wrote:Is it fun? Whats the point of it?
Then you basically fight the bad guys
I've done that too. Had a few games a bought ages ago, and the CDs aren't allways in such a good shape after a few years wihout a case:PM. Cressler wrote:To be fair i bought it a long time ago i didn't feel like buying it twice

Re: Dangerous Waters
Have you played it with the Grey Wolves? It's a mod, awesome one. Adds lots more ships and tweaks a few things. Pluss it adds some pure aesthetic things. Such as background chatter in the sub, and the dive alarm + voices/shouts from "Das Boot" Pure awesome.

You should. There is just something about suddenly spotting an allied aircraft comming in, hitting the crash dive button, and having someone scream "ALAAARM!".

Ever heard of pacific storm? It's more of a strategy game than a sim game, but it still has very realistic models.

Re: Dangerous Waters
Dangerous Waters can be pretty hard if you crank up the realism. You man the sonar, track the target (which is more an artform than a science), assign weapons and edit their settings... Oh, and drive the sub/ship/helo/plane, whatever you're on. In a high contact enviornment you can be pretty busy! And telling which contact will shoot at you if there are say 6-7 in range is pretty tricky.
Tracking 1 target going straight and at a constant speed is not THAT hard. Passive sonar gives you baring and speed, a few minutes later you'll have heading, then you just have to figure out range. However 6-7 is a bit more tricky, and if the ones you're after know you're after them they don't usually run straight and at the same speed

Re: Dangerous Waters
This reminds me of the Ace Combat games. I have 04, 05, and 06. They're so fun, it's 1st person flying. The payloads in 06 are unrealistic though, as you carry like up to 600 missles in some planes, compared to the other games where you have between 40-70.

Re: Dangerous Waters
In reeal life, you can only have 2 missiles and what, four bombs? The hardest mission in 5 was the one with all of the bunkers when you have to take over that island owned by the enemy.

Re: Dangerous Waters
In what, Ace Combat? I know, I beat the campaign on 04 because I beat it, and I'm stuck on the mission in 06 where there's like 5 of these freakin huge UFO transport ship things! There's missles EVERYWHERE!

Never seen it....sounds kinda unrealistic haha. I think 5 was the best one haha. I like the ghosts of Razgriz. Flying in those black f-22's taking down the Arc was very easy and fun .

I think it is too. The storyline is great and the game is pretty realistic. I still 4 has the best music though.

I still play Silent Hunter 2, the best one IMHO, as for dangerous waters. I suck at it, like 3 seconds into the game I get killed.

Re: Dangerous Waters
Yeah, it's a pretty good game. I have Destroyer Command, which you can use to play online against people with Silent Hunter 2 You should give Silent Hunter 3 a try, with one of the larger mods.EwanRaven wrote:

It's a series of games. They're on Silent Hunter 5 now. They alternate between setting it in the Atlantic (and you play as a German WW2 Uboat), and the Pacific (and you play as an American WW2 submarine fighting the Japanese).C. Davis wrote:What's Silent Hunter?
It's pretty hard if you just dive right into it with full realism. There are however a lot of good tutorials out there. http://www.subguru.com/downloads.htmlA. Botfish wrote:It's a sub game. I have Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific. I don't even know how to play Dangerous Waters
The Orion Warrior one is THE guide if you want to play as the P-3C
I recommend you start out in the SH-60 Seahawk. It's the easiest platform to learn. You don't have all that many stations, and unlike the P-3 you can stop and hover.

Yeah, its pretty good. The third and fourth have good graphics, especially with mods. The fifth one is out, but its ok in some ways and sucks in others.

Note to self: Do not head directly towards a reported convoy in the dark when there is a storm. Damn nearly got rammed by the lead merchant of the convoy. This was Silent Hunter 4.
